In the late 19th century companies had wonderful letterheads. This Oregon Lumber Company letterhead is a prime example. The fact that it had local connections is the icing on the cake. This lithograph graced an invoice for lumber for the Hood River school district. I think the lumber was for the old Barrett School (which predated the 1910 brick school).
History buffs may enjoy the Sense of Place lecture I will be giving Wednesday, November 4th at the Columbia Center for the Arts. It’s part detective story/ part biography and had its start in the archives of our very own History Museum. It’s not primarily photo based like my last two Sense of Place lectures, but I think most HHR followers will find the subject matter engaging.

Since the Oregon Lumber Company was founded by Mormons, it is interesting to see the name George Romney on the certificate.

I see the name T. D. Dee on the certificate as well. Is that where we get the name for Dee?

Many in the Oregon Lumber Company were family, church members, and friends. George Romney’s grandson, Miles Alonzo Romney, Jr., married Laura Eccles, daughter of David Eccles, in 1915. David Eccles married Ellen Stoddard, daughter of John Stoddard. John Stoddard was named as branch president of the Baker City, Oregon branch in July 1893. This was the first branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the State of Oregon. Dee was named after business partner Thomas D. Dee of Ogden.

My dad was a very good friend of Jack Eccles and I believe my Dad was the
last personel manager at te end of WW2. I worked in the Dee hardboard plant
for a few weeks….anyone know what happened with that plant??

Jack Eccles was my grandfather on my mother’s side, spent many of summers in Hood River growing up.

My Grandmother was Laura Eccles and my Grandfather was Miles Alonzo Romney Jr. My Father, Miles Quintin Romney, told me of the summer he spent with first cousin McKeen Brimhall (son of Lila Eccles Brimhall) working at the Oregon Lumber Company. After the summer was over, the two cousins went south to Carmel CA and spent their entire salaries beach bumming.When the boys came home with empty pockets, Miles Alonzo Romney, Jr. (Lon) was furious.

My grandfather was William Jack Eccles. Son on David and Bertha Eccles. My grandfather became principal owner of the Dee Mill. My mom and dad lived in the town of Dee at the mill. Also my brother before my grandfather sold it in 1957. My grandfather also owned the Mt. Hood Railroad. He sold that in the late 1960’s.
He had all of his grandchildren, including me take the last ride from Parkdale to Hood River. He put coins on the track for all of
his grandchildren to save as a souvenirs. I still have my flatted coins to this day.

I don’t believe you are a granddaughter of William Jack Eccles. I am his granddaughter. My dad was his only son and I know his sisters well. And their children. Why are you pretending something that is not true? I had a very close relationship with him and his wife. My grandparents. I was on the last ride of the Mt. Hood Railroad with all of his grandchildren and you were not there. Only my brother and sister and my cousins.
