This Crag Rats image is captioned, “On Top of St. Helens, June 29 1930, by Cochran.” It’s hard to believe this entire view would be vaporized less than 50 years later.
yes, hard to believe but remember well the view from the Pittock and having to replace my house gutters….a clear indicator of who is the boss. I also remember driving home from a Sunday class at Marylhurst College and wondering what all that swirling “stuff” was on the highway….. Arlen

My family and I had just left Vancouver B.C. the morning St. Helens blew. Turned around and came south the next day. Toutle River crossing on I-5 was just plane scary!

What was the building on top of St. Helens we see in this photo? Was that a climbers hut, a lookout or a summer lodge? Fond memories of staying in the cabins and going out in the rental boats at the original Spirit Lake in the mid-70's…was such a beautiful place. Harry Truman, R.I.P.

I would assume that the first floor of this mountain top building is buried in the snow. But the cedar shakes and the carpentry is what you would find in a downtown abode. Everything had to carried up the mountain. What an accomplishment. But wouldn't pressure of the snow make long term survival of a building doubtful?.

I believe this was a fire lookout, just like they had on top of Mt. Hood.
Harold
Yes, the fire lookout was a cupola cabin built in the late teens and abandoned in 1928.
