I believe this image of the Eastside grade was printed with the negative flipped, so I have reversed it for you. It’s hard to imagine what it would be like to lead a team pulling a cart loaded with apples or provisions up or down this steep, muddy grade. They did not put many railings on roads in this era, so you know this was a dangerous pitch.
The caption says “Old East Side grade about 1912.” I believe the location below is close to the same spot, though the road has been re-engineered several times in the past century. This is the only place on the grade where there is any orchard visible.

I think the road actually looks pretty good for 1912.
But, it is a nice sunny day. Not a rainy or snowy day.
Is that an old car coming down the New road?
