Historic Hood River
Old Dalles Road?

Notes

We haven’t seen a Davidson image for a while. I think this is the lower reaches of Old Dalles Road. That looks like Mt. Defiance in the distance, with a little bit of snow clinging to the peak. I’m surprised to see so many utility pole out here circa 1915.

Definitely Defiance with the snow cap, and I think you’re right about the road too.

If I was to be at all critical of the suggested location, I would offer that it’s likely near the top, at the intersection with Elder and the microwave tower access. Hard to compare with Google due to tree growth, but the elevation looks better to me, and I think there’s still a trace of the gated road that branches downhill and east.

Having grown up on the Old Dalles Road, I believe the road coming down the hill to the right heads into the draw where my grandfather, Rhuben Elder had built a house. After my grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Winans Elder died in 1950, my parents moved in with him with me as a 1-year-old. We were there three years until moving down the house you see directly in front of you when you turn off East Side Road.
Years after grandfather sold the house, it burned down.
