We’ve seen plenty of Alva Day photos of American Legion Mt. Hood climbs before, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen one with a stop sign along the route. This was from the 1937 climb. Perhaps some of the mountaineers can explain the crowd control issues for such a massive endeavor.

Looks like the classic ‘Cooper Spur’ route…..off to the left of course is Eliot Glacier, and there is a falling route called the ‘Chisomn’ (sp) Trail, which is the fall line should one slip free, it leads over the cliffs and into the Eliot. Not recommended, but I know a local who survived that ‘ride’!

I chatted with Bill Pattison about this one. He said Crag Rats were always playing pranks, hauling strange things up the mountain or putting rocks in someone else’s pack. He thought this could be someone’s idea of a joke.

Might have been a legitimate warming sign. Not fun to take a sleigh ride from that point.
Also the snow looks to be very soft for late in the season.

That is what I wondered. I know nothing about climbing Mt Hood, but after reading James’s comment, I thought maybe the stop sign was legitimate.
Maybe the last person down the hill turned it?

Knowing some of the pranks that the fun loving Rats could have, I personally like the idea one of them hauled that up there….
