I think those are young apple trees, but they seem awfully close together. I wonder if this was a nursery raising trees for local orchards?

Looking at the hills in the background, maybe this is part of the experiment station in its early days.

Arthur, do you have any idea when this picture was taken. At first glance I thought it might be my grandfather Galligan who had a nursery on Dethman Ridge. I was told that at one time half the apple trees in Hood River had come from his nursery.

All I know is that that is the cut over there where The Old Dalles Road goes up. Too far south to be the Experiment Station……Dethman Ridge seems just about right….

What is the terrain like on the old road to The Dalles and where did it or does it come out?

It can be driven most of the way to Mosier, but just over the top you hit gated.property. Coming west from Mosier past twin tunnel trailhead it is also drivable until gated and is apparently the same property. East of Mosier it goes through Ortley and on to the Dalles. Check it on acme mapper 2.1.

We’re looking at the notch from the Old Dalles road, but I think we’re seeing it from the west side. My guess was roughly Nobis on Tucker Road, and that lines up almost perfectly in Google Earth. I think it’s somewhere between the transfer station and Nobi’s not far off Tucker Road.
If we were closer to the notch, it would have to be a very wide angle lens, but by the view of the man and the trees in the foreground I don’t think that’s the case.

My mother remembered that the Indians (her word) came through the notch and down the Old Dalles Road – it came out very close to her fathers ranch – they had rustic furniture for sale, made from unpeeled logs. This memory would have been in the ’20s as the ranch house burned to the ground in the early 30’s.

Right – I was thinking – somewhere near Nobi’s or thereabouts. And didn’t the Experiment Station (or whatever its predecessor was) live in that Sheppard house near the Catholic cemetery?

On the route of the road to The Dalles above, forgot to mention that from Ortly the road desends seven mile hill. Near the bottom it crossed a wood trestle until 1929 when a 1912 steel bridge was moved in from Maupin where a new Deschuttes River briidge was constructed. What a chore to dismantle a bridge of that size, move it to The Dalles and reconstruct it.

How about Ideal Grader and Nursery Company, where Platt Electric, Schlosser Machine & Welding, etc are now located. The Guinard family had a large apple orchard and nursery there into the 60’s or so.
