I looked at this image several times before I realized there were people in it. We know almost nothing about it, but I can say the image was taken with a very primitive camera. It’s a great example of a “nurse log” in a forest, though I guess these seedlings haven’t chosen the best log for longevity.

I wonder if that log was at one time a foot bridge?
There must be a good trail or road somewhere close by since the three people seem elderly with a possible cane and crutch. Odd photo but interesting.

Guessing these nurse sprouts are maybe 5′ tall? I’m not so sure this happens so much in our woods anymore. Maybe up in the Seattle rain forests. But even in our coastal forests I’m not seeing this healthy of a symbiosis.

Surveyors tripod? It almost looks like an excavated ditch under the log… maybe one of the early ditches built in the West Fork drainage?
