Notes
Grace’s post for today offers interesting insight into wedding dresses and the Great Depression:
This pink organdy and satin wedding dress was worn by Charlotte Brosius, daughter of Emma and Dr. F.C. Brosius, at her wedding to Charles J. Johnson on May 16, 1936. After Queen Victoria popularized the white bridal gown in 1840, white and ivory had become the standard, but colored dresses regained popularity in the 1930s due to the Great Depression and shifts in popular culture. In the 1930s, a pink wedding dress was a versatile choice that could be reused for other occasions. Looking at Charlotte’s gown today is a wonderful reminder that even while recorded in black and white, history was lived in color.
