Historic Hood River
“Nellie Before I Owned Her”
11-12-2025

Notes
Pansy DeWitt captioned this image, “Nellie before I owned her about 1915 or 16”. She’s a nice looking horse but I’m more interested in the background. You can see the steeple of the United Brethren Church which places this roughly at 5th and Cascade, though the Sanborn map doesn’t match perfectly. The area was just being developed so the map may have captured a different snapshot in time. The main streets downtown would have been paved by this date, but out here people were still getting about on horseback.

When I opened this up this morning, I just happened to be parked at 5th and Cascade. I was waiting for a friend who had an appt at one of the offices.
Kind of hard to imagine being able to look that direction and see a steeple.
