Historic Hood River
Mrs. Diskin’s Class
5-5-2016

Notes
Here’s Mrs. Diskin’s class at Coe Primary School in 1952. It’s a good image for the hundredth anniversary of the Coe Primary building, as we have at least one HHR reader in here:
- Donald Scheie
- David Hull
- Carl Shinkle
- Roger Sheldrake
- Kristin Jernstedt
- Marilyn Fox
- Doug Runckel
- Larry Wells
- Richard Stenberg
- Bobby Carlton
- Alan Carter
- Steve Downing
- Carol Siders
- Karen Baker

Wondering if there were two class of children this age. Why I ask is Richard Stenberg had a twin brother Ray that should have been in this photo if just one class room.
Some names sound familiar. Know that Steve Downing was married to Judy Towsend.
Arlen, how is Roger Sheldrake related to you?
JIm Gray
Must have been at least 2 classes, My sister graduated with this group. Kristi Jernstedt, Marilyn Fox & David Hull were a some of her friends. Kristi the daughter of Ken Jernstedt of WW2 fame & HR Mayor. Doug Runckel’s Dad ran the Dee Mill at the time, Dave Hull’s brother just retired as a Judge.
Bill Seaton
Before I saw a single name, I saw the picture and said to myself, that looks like a Sheldrake to me.
L.E.
Immediately identifiable as a 1950’s era photo.
I wonder who sets the era styles for dress and haircuts.
Mrs. Diskin could be 1940’s or 1950’s era. Looks like a fun group of kids to teach.
Arlen Sheldrake
Neat picture Arthur. Roger is my younger brother who resides in Corvallis with his wife. Our parents and Roger moved to Corvallis in 1960 and he graduated from Corvallis High…..I was off protecting the world in Hawaii. Roger visits this site occasionally.
Norma
Don’t know who identified these students but they have all the boys and only four of the girls? I know that Steve and Kristie have since passed away..
Arthur
Collections of class pictures usually either follow a teacher or a student. This one is from a collection which shows Mrs. Diskin’s classes in the 1940s and 1950s. The IDs are all in the same hand, so I suspect Mrs. Diskin provided them herself. Since there are names missing I suspect they were done at a later date, possibly much later.
Buzz
Norma, teachers remember names of bad boys better than names of nice little girls.
Judy
Dave Hull has passed also, I think. What a neat group of kids!
JIm Gray
Dave is still with us, lives on Tucker Road
Kenn
Arlen or Roger, where is the Sheldrake family represented in the picture?
Arlen Sheldrake
to the left and behind (back row) the boy with his finger in his mouth is Roger S.
James Holloway
What grades are these kids? Maybe 3rd……….
Dan K
Well I don,the what grade this picture is but I had her for first grade in 1961
Roger Sheldrake
Yes! There is a Sheldrake in that picture. I still have my solid oak chair that my parents John & Lois Sheldrake provided for me. Many good memmories of Hood River
Arlen Sheldrake
Roger believes this is his first grade picture.
Carl Shinkle
This is first grade 1952-53. There were four classes o about 20 per. We were in the eastern most room o the newer, upper building. Rich and Ray Stenberg were always in separate rooms as per their parents’ request. Oddly, Richard and I were in the same home room first through eighth grade. No one else was with us every year.
Carl Shinkle
One correction: Don Scheie (not Scheil) is someone I’ve been in contact with recently. He lives in Wasilla, Alaska, with wife Mary (she was from Odell and I think her maiden name was Martinson, though I’ve never met her). They have two daughters and five grandchildren near them. Mary owns and runs a toy store in Wasilla.
I’m not sure o any more names, but the first girl on the left front…I keep hearing the name Bonnie Oates in my mind. The girl next to her looks like Laurel Raycraft. I also keep hearing the name Janette Arnett in my mind’s ear.
Arthur
Thanks, Carl, I made the correction to Don Scheie.
Laurel
The first girl on the left in the front row is Patty Cantrell. The next girl looks a lot like me, but I did not have Mrs. Diskin. This is either 1st or 2nd grade because these two schools only went to grade two. If it was actually 1952 it had to be 1st grade because we were in first grade in ’52-’53.
Jackie Cooper
Does anyone have a picture of Mrs Dickens first grade class from 1957?
Carol Jean Hawkins Solomon
Pansy Desken was my first grade teacher in 1953. She retired the same year our class graduated from High School. A bunch of us went to visit her that day. We loved her!!!
Dwaine (Spike) Goodwin
Ms. Diskin was my First Grade teacher in 1948 at Coe Primary. Her Husband was the School Bus driver that picked us up on the East side route. He, Mr. Diskin, kicked me off the bus numerous times for misbehaving (fighting) when one or more of the boys would start picking on the girls or another smaller boy. The walk to school was a good penalty and it taught me that actions have consequences. It took a few times but I did finally come around. Ms. Diskin had initially an issue with the spelling of my name (Dwaine), she attempted to convince me that the correct spelling was "Duane" I ,of course, resisted strenuously and was "expelled" from her class. My Mom had to come and straighten the issue out before I was allowed back in class. Mr. & Ms. Diskin are fond memories.

Which one is Doug Runckel? I babysat him and his brothers when they lived on Prospect and afterbthey moved to Montello.

Great photo. I was in the other class, think it was Mrs. Johnson. I recognize Roger Sheldrake as he was my neighbor and good friend. Also Alan Carter (bottom right). Many other kids I recognize by name. We moved to Gresham in 1958(end of 6th grade). Would love to see more photos of this class(high school class of ’64). I have lived in Welches for the last 14 years.
