Historic Hood River
Moving Day
12-8-2021

Notes
This 1995 Sally Donovan photo shows the Blowers/Gatchel House being readied for a move across the street. Workers have been clearing a path to put beams under the house so it can be lifted.
In 1903 this house was built on 12th Street for Amby and Ellen Blowers. Originally located on the west side of the street, it needed to be moved to make room for a parking lot for the hospital. The move happened in 1995. You can see it below at its current location, 715 12th Street. it’s been through a lot, but it still looks great. You can read the entire history in its Oregon Historic Sites Database entry.

I had a first aid class in that house before it was moved.

Was the house rotated when it wad moved. Judging by the shadows I would guess that it was. Do we know which street it fronted before the move and what the address was. Google street view goes back to 2007 and shows the conditions on the block south of the house before the construction of the current parking structure but this house was already moved by then.

The house was rotated and has always faced 12th St. Wonder what the house number was before moving if house #'s are always odd on one side and even on the other. Excellent information on Historic Sites Database; note that the chimney described on the north is now on south side of house. Have not heard of Viola St. Thanks for posting, Arthur.

Much appreciation for the people who are willing to do what is necessary to preserve these homes. There are some homes that are long gone up in the Heights area that should have/wish they had been preserved.

If I am reading the maps correctly Viola is now Eugene, and Sinclair is now 12th. These are from the 1905 Sanborn map.

The Paradise Acres plat map in the abstract paperwork for Robert Vaughan, my great grandfather, who lived on 13th street, shows Viola and other unfamiliar street names.
