Here’s a great “back to school” image. Ruth Shafer took this picture of Mitsuo and Masao Takasumi in Odell circa 1920. I think they were students in her classroom at the Odell School.
I suspect their pails are re-purposed lard cans.

Hood River and environs is a better place as a result of their work ethics in particular and other cultural characteristics of the Japanese people over the decades.

Good old lard pails had numerous uses over the years. In this instance, they made superior lunch pails. (NOTE: Lard makes better pie crust than Crisco)
Mits was the older of the two. His wife was Misako. Their parents were Tokuzo and Chiyo. Mas had a degree in auto mechanics and in agriculture, which he put to good use on the ranch here in the valley.
A good class mate of mine was Norman Takasumi, who was the son of Mits.
How very "spiffy" these two little fellows were sent off to school. There was a mother who only wished her sons to be seen in their best.
Adorable smiles on both. I get the impression that they enjoyed school.

I was high school and college friends with Bill and Dick Takasumi, sons of Mas Takasumi.
