Museum Director Lynn Orr likes to say, “If it happened yesterday, it’s history.” This wasn’t quite yesterday– but it is a good test of our powers of recollection. How accurately can you date this image of downtown urban renewal construction from our recent past using just your memory? What clues do you see? I have the benefit of camera metadata embedded in the image file, but it’s not so easy! I’ll need to go a little easier in my complaints about the inaccuracies I find in the notes on the back of images in our collection.

I don’t know when this was done, but a very interesting fact about the area. All that "dirt" behind that retaining wall is the mud flow which came down from Mt. Hood when he blew his stack. That flow went racing across the Columbia and way up the river on the other side. My cousin is a geologist and for a few years was working in the area every summer of the various fault lines and such. He showed me all this and explained that to me. If you go up the Klickitat you will find rocks from Mt. Hood that were taken over there in that mud flow. He said that flow probably did some blockage to the Columbia and over time it all washed away to the sea.

The gas price is a key point….2011 – 2012 .

I think it was 2007-08 when they did the last round of Urban Renewal. We were renovating our 1904 building at 3rd and Oak and I remember looking out of our new second-floor conference room, up Oak Street in its newly beautified state. (I could be wrong though, as they we suffered through several rounds of urban renewal.)

Even years later after this project (parking) was completed & we still do not have adequate parking downtown. Great picture. Price of gas? $$$

March 13, 2014. This was the final phase of urban renewal. Oak Street was done on two earlier phases, one in 2007-2008 as Jay recalls.

Not enough adequate parking downtown? I am down there many times a week and always find a spot. Might have to park a few blocks away, but has never been an issue.
