Historic Hood River
McArthur Party

Notes
This print isn’t in great shape, but it tells an important story. This is Lewis McArthur and party at Elk Meadows on Mt. Hood. I believe it may be part of the 1915 survey trip for the Mt. Hood Loop Highway which we saw in this image. Hopefully someone can fill us in.

One of the saddles on the left side of the photo looks like a possible government issue McClellan saddle.

In the original edition of “Mount Hood: A Complete History” Jack Grauer describes Barney Cooper in his role as U.S. Forest Service District Ranger:
“When high government officials made the preliminary survey of the Loop Road in 1915, Barney took them over the Forest Service trail that was in common use through Elk Meadow.” A photo of Barney Cooper (and his horse) at Elk Meadows accompanies this description — page 116.
