Historic Hood River
May Pole

Notes
These kids don’t seem to be too thrilled to be outside with the May Pole in this 1913 image. The caption gives us some information which some HHR readers will find interesting: “Hattie Bailey and Ella Everson Sheldrake teachers at Mt. Hood 1913.” Someone has added “Old Cooper school” below.
Newspaper accounts confirm Miss Everson and Miss Bailey were teachers at Mt. Hood.
Charlott
Hattie Bailey was an Ohio native, the daughter of Aquilla and Angeline Bailey. She did a number of things in her life, first a servant in Colorado and finally living in Hood River with her brother M. Oakley Bailey where she took up teaching about 1910. My guess is that she probably boarded in the area when teaching at Mt. Hood, as in that day that would have been quite a ways to go each morning and night. Then there was a period that she lived in California. Her last job was with the U.S. government in Washington D. C.
Since Ella Sheldrake was Arlen’s grandmother, he can give information on her.
Roger Sheldrake
Ella Everson Sheldrake was born June 30, 1886 in Coon Valley, Vernon , WI. Married John H. Sheldrake June 14, 1914. Passed away Dec. 2, 1964. They had six children. John L. Sheldrake being my father.

"Old Cooper School" Now is this referring to the school, now community center at Mt. Hood, or the school that was just south of Hanel’s Mill?
Arlen L. Sheldrake
interesting Roger that both our grandmothers (Della Latham Sheirbon) were at one time school teachers….
