Historic Hood River
Martha L. Hjaltalin on Courthouse Lawn
4-28-2022

Notes
Notes indicate the woman on the right is Martha L. Nealeigh Hjaltalin on the courthouse lawn, circa 1918. The automobiles seem to be from that era. If the “L” stands for Lillian, this would be the mother of longtime museum volunteer and board member Nellie Hjaltalin, who passed away in 2017.
The Kelly Hardware Building is still on the corner of 3rd and State. The wood frame building on the other side of 3rd has an advertisement for “Can’t Bust Em Overalls.” You can see a similar billboard and learn about the overalls here.
L.E.
The Hjaltalins were from Iceland.
In HHR photo #262 Charlotte Jones says Lillian Hjaltalin worked at Paris Fair for many years.
Judy
As I understood, she worked for Meier & Frank for many years also.

Wow, that overall brand had quite slogan on their tags. I do think it is disappointing and inappropriate for you to provide a link to this without talking about the blatant racism in the history of our town and this shop.
