Historic Hood River
March Madness
1-4-2013

Notes
I’m sure this seemed like a good idea at the time. These members of the Hood River fire department seem to be testing their breathing equipment on the basketball court. I suspect this was part of the HRFD game against the Crag Rats which we saw in this image.

Arlen Sheldrake
No wonder Ed Vannet @ HRHS required us all to wear Converse black high top basketball shoes…….quite the diversity here. Looks like the HRHS gym….the fast break teams worst nightmare……Arlen
Jim Gray
I think this is the May Street gym, no doubt the fireman had to wear a handicap because they were so good, right Bill?
Bill Seaton
It looks like the May Street Gym to me.
Jill Stanford
Words fail me. . . .
l.e.
I don’t know what to say.
Arthur
No one can ID these players? Surely someone must recognize those knees.
Nancy Trotic
I love how those two kids at the right are peeking around the men to get in the picture.
Norma Jubitz Simpson
Could this possibly be from the mid 50’s? Some of the boys on the top row of the bleachers look familiar. Possibly Larry Sanstrum and Doug Flint?
Arthur
Norma, Bill Pattison says the game was winter of 1953, so your IDs may be correct.
charlott
Too bad the boys in the bleachers can’t be pulled out, as we would all probably know a lot of them…….

These were the first self contained breathing apperatise issued to the HRFD. We were required to dive to the bottom of the City swimming pool to prove our personal reliance on the equipment. Actually we had a lot of fun and it was the beginng of the equipment used today.
