Notes

We’ll mark Memorial Day with a photo of some Hood River boys far away from home. Maltie Dukes is identified as the man without a hat, 9th from the left 2nd row from the back. I suspect this image is from the Philippines, during the Spanish American War. It’s hard to image what it would have been like for someone who grew up in Hood River to find himself across the Pacific.

Several well known expressions developed from this war, but the history of the war is no longer well known, nor the politics.
“Remember The Maine”. “Rough Riders”. “Battle of San Juan Hill”

    And “Yellow Journalism”.

    I came across this:
“The Oregon Volunteers in the Spanish-American War and Philippine Insurrection : the annotated and edited diary of Chriss A. Bell, May 2, 1898 to June 24, 1899”

It is interesting reading. Maltie Dukes is not mentioned but it perhaps gives an idea of his life while in the Philippines. Chriss Bell returned to Portland and worked as an attorney.

The Glacier published a series of letters from Clarence English to his mother. Great stories of his experience in the Philippines.
