We’ll mark Memorial Day with a photo of some Hood River boys far away from home. Maltie Dukes is identified as the man without a hat, 9th from the left 2nd row from the back. I suspect this image is from the Philippines, during the Spanish American War. It’s hard to image what it would have been like for someone who grew up in Hood River to find himself across the Pacific.

It is interesting reading. Maltie Dukes is not mentioned but it perhaps gives an idea of his life while in the Philippines. Chriss Bell returned to Portland and worked as an attorney.
