Notes

This Frank Patterson stereocard was titled “Lunchtime at Pine Grove.” Notes indicate it was from 1913, which is much older than I would have guessed. Clarence McCoy is the teacher, and the notes say, “Faces Identified John Mohr, Tom Scott and Cretia Taylor.”

I see several lard buckets, which I am guessing held lunch. One kid is holding up what look like a half-eaten donut.

I will agree that it is about 1913 as my father is in the photo. He would have been a first or second grader. If you look on the right side of the photo and see about the 2nd row. You will see a little boy with straight across cut of bangs look out. That is my father, Harold Wells who was born in 1906. I think the boy right behind him on the far right (as you are looking at the photo) is another Wells cousin, but can't say which one.

If you look at that row of girls in the very back and count over, between the 4th and 5th girl, the boy who appears somewhat between them is my great uncle, Cecil Thrane, who was born in 1904.

I know I have other relatives in this photo, but unable to pick them out.

I am inclined to believe this is probably the first 4 grades. There were older children, which I know and don't see any of them here.

It appears that there is an older girl standing in a doorway in the back. You also can see the bikes in the “bike shed” as there were no buses and a lot of the kids rode bikes and the rest walked.

Great photo. I think I see a baseball mitt.
My grandma and grandpa cut a lot of firewood with a saw like the one hanging on the wall.
What is the building? Is it the school?

This building was along the eastern side of the school property. I think it was both a horse/wagon shed and a bike shed. What the portion was with the door I don't know, as I don't think they had a house for the janitor. Maybe so, but all of this was long gone before my time. In my early school days there was a house on the northeastern side that housed the janitor, then the play ground equipment, first teeter totters, the money bars, the merry-go-round and finally the slide. Next to that was the play shed.

Clarence Rayborn McCoy was a native of Michigan. He was born in 1882, eventually coming to Hood River. He was one of the teachers in the Pine Grove Grade School. His wife was Martha Shadley, but always went by the nickname “Bird”. They lived initially up on Neal Creek. Their children were: Clarence Jr., Ferris, Evelyn who married William Lee and lived over in the Frankton district, Miriam, who married George Howard Sheppard and lived on Dethman Ridge and Dorothy.

He eventually gave up his teaching career and became one of the local Hood River farmers. Both he and “Bird” are buried in the Pine Grove Cemetery.
