Historic Hood River
Lost Lake Fishing
4-1-2022

Notes
I suspect this one was more about photographic composition than fishing. Alva Day has posed Io in the rowboat with the fishing gear at the exact spot needed to get the classic reflection of Mt. Hood in Lost Lake. The boat is still chained to the shore so they’re not going anyplace. We have no evidence that Io was interested in hunting or fishing. The image is from September 1951.

You have to admit he’s got good composition, even to having her lean slightly to
the left so as to get the whole mountain reflection. Is there only one paddle?

Late summer, judging from the snow on the Mt.
Arlen L Sheldrake
HR County Judge John H. Sheldrake during this tenure opposed paving the road to Lost Lake as one way to keep the "flock" from Portland from ruining this treasure.. Always loved that piece of family history as I have resided in Portland for some 50 years.

They look like sisters. Might be the first photo I have seen of Io that she isn’t laughing.

It’s a true classic Lost Lake wooden rental boat with a number. The other oar is in the water out of view. Beauty Pic for a Spring Day – 4/1 Thank ya !

Is there a name for the little hill in the background on the center-left side?

Sentinel Peak 4,565′ is the peak in the background.

Thanks OrMtnMaid.
In the August 1900 HR Glacier is an article about a trip to Lost Lake.
They take a hack as far as Maple Dell and then horseback the rest of the way.

Also a description of leaving Cloud Cap to climb Mt Hood. Owing to a large crevasse across the face of the mountain and scarcity of snow on top, there will be no more climbing parties going up from Cloud Cap.

Also, Benjamin Gifford, the photographer received an order from O.R. &N. Co. for 1,000 pictures of his famous picture of sunrise on Mt. Hood from Lost Lake.
I don’t think Arthur has that photo.
