While I agree that it is staged Arthur, it sure shows the tools of the "trade" that were employed to clear the land for farming. Any ideas on location and date? Those misery whips (saws) were NOT any fun; as my Dad would shout, DON’T PUSH..

This is part of a group with the name "A.J. Shepler" on the back. Some of the other images are dated "1900" or "early 1900’s," but this one has no notes on it at all. The print is very faded so I’ve adjusted the exposure a bit.

Alfred James Shepler was born 14 Apr 1882 in Indiana. In 1900 he was living in Chenowith, Skamania, WA and is listed as a timber feller. In 1910 he lived in Fruit Valley Pct, Klickitat, WA and was a ferry boatman. In 1918 he lived at 3 East Sherman, Hood River, and worked as a ferryman for dean & Shepler. In 1930 he was a carpenter in Hood River.
