This image from a brochure is captioned “Timber Cutting and Logging Scene in the Forest Near Hood River.” I’m sure it’s posed, but I like the way it lays out all the tools of the trade for loggers of that era: crosscut saws, axes, and horses to haul it all out of there. It’s pretty amazing they kept sawmills busy considering the tools they had available.

I have a photo similar to this of my husband’s grandfather logging in the HR area.
He came to the “land of opportunity” as a young man from Illinois, but after being injured in a logging accident, he hobbled is way west to the Portland area.

I work at a lumber mill and can’t imagine working with logs that big. Much respect for the fellows that cut down those monsters with hand tools.
