This hand-tinted image is a schoolhouse at Locke Hill near White Salmon. It was in operation until 1914. A note on the reverse says, “Walter Reeve Woolpert taught.”

I would expect a school stove to be somewhere near the center of a sidewall, it appears here only the teacher would stay warm ~

Klickitat County history, but I don’t know much about it. I think the original Locke homestead was down on the Columbia River just east of Bingen.
As Arthur says, Locke Hill is north of there up on the Snowden Road.
There might still be a Locke Hill school standing that is used as a home.

I live in one of the Lock Hill School. This one was built in 1915. It was used as a school and then turned in to a home many years later. I am not sure this one is mine. It is 3 1/2 miles up Snowden Rd.

Judy, I found a newspaper article describing this one as being replaced by a modern new building in 1914. They must be talking about your 1915 house as the replacement for this building.

I would love to know more about where the photo came from. Walter Reeve Woolpert would have been around 21 years old in 1914.

Walter Reeve Woolpert was my Grandfather. I would like to know more about this school also.

Walter Reeve Woolpert was my Grandfather as well. He was born on August 15, 1893. He would have thus been 20 or 21 when the photo was taken, depending on the time of year. He married Mildred Lucille Wickson in 1916 and lived in Hood River. In WW2 he was a Colonel posted to Italy.
