This hand-colored image is labelled “Oram’s snap of local White Salmon Indians about 1914.” A camera bump or printing error obscures some of the detail, but the hand-coloring, primitive as it is, still helps us see the image as real people living in the moment, rather than figures from remote history.

Rather than heading to the huckleberry fields etc, I wonder if they on their way to a ceremony.
I have read that when they camped in the huckleberry fields they had huge herds of horses with them.

Horses were always a status symbol in many of the tribes. So they would naturally have had many ponies with them. I imagine that these indians are from up around Yakima.
I do not think that these were any of the indian girls that were Underwoods, as by then they had adopted most of the white man ways. In fact Isabella (Lear) Underwood was sent off by her step-father Amos to school to learn the white mans way. She returned as a very cultured, educated girl.
