Roadside fruit stands are popular this time of year. We don’t have any detail on this “Lewis Orchard Company” stand but the “Elko border” from a company on Kansas City Missouri apparently dates it to the 1930s, 40’s or 50’s. It looks like they have plenty of varieties of apples to choose from, as well as barrels of “washed apples”, possibly lower grade apples for sauce or cider. It also looks like they have jars of honey or jam for sale.
Does anyone have any info on the Lewis Orchard Company? This image is mixed in with our collection of Ideal Grader & Equipment Manufacturer images. The connection? An image with the same border shows a piece of equipment loading those barrels of washed apples. Apparently they were a customer of Mr. Guignard and Mr. Rosiger’s company. Maybe this farm stand was on the Mt. Hood Loop Highway, or maybe they were just customers of the Ideal Grader & Equipment Manufacturer company.

Was it arsenic they were using on apples?

“Corona Dry” was the brand name for Arsenate of Lead which was commonly used on apples for fungus, insects, or any other problem. A. I. Mason proudly described the white crust on his apples, so I suspect this fruit washing machine was very important!

Well Arthur, that wasn’t very nice of you to send me down a rabbit hole this morning looking for a Lewis Orchard.
I didn’t come up with much for Lewis Orchard Company. The best find was Lewis Orchards in Maryland, which I would love to visit. It has been a family run orchard since 1888.

The December 06, 1931 P. 32 Kansas City Star has an add from Lewis Orchard Co. at Lees Summit, Missouri. Lees Summit is a suburb of Kansas City, the location of Elko Camera Shop.
