Notes

I forgot we had this Brubaker aerial view of the Parkdale Lava beds in our collection. I believe this is from a series from the mid 1940s. A note on the reverse says, “Parkdale Lava Beds, 5000 years.”

Tom Kloster’s wonderful Wyeast Blog covered the lava beds in this post and this one. He cites more modern geologists dating it at 7000 years old, and gives some clearer aerial views.

Until now, I did not know there were lava beds in the HR area, although knowing Mt. Hood is a volcano, I should not have been surprised by this. I guess these beds are relatively well hidden, unless you know where to look for them. I really appreciate and enjoy this HHR site for the education. Thanks Arthur!

Well hidden unless you fly over in an airplane!

Not well-hidden: just drive due west from downtown Parkdale on Baseline, which turns into the well-named Lava Bed Drive.
