Apparently he had served a church in Burns prior to coming to Hood River, as he had a daughter Sarah "Sally" who was born there. He also had son John Lovell Pickells Jr. and another daughter Margaret "Maggie."

Ah, the hours of sitting around the Philco radio set listening to the Lone Ranger…..some of us old folk grew up during the transition period from radio to b/w three channel TV…….while I don’t remember our first radio, I sure remember our first TV……

My Dad came home with a TV alright! A whopping big 7 inch screen! I remember when color television came in. My Dad took me downtown to look at the Rose Parade (I think) in color through the window of the appliance store. This was in Ohio.

"The Shadow knows. . . ." I miss radio programs — kids today do not have to imagine a thing. I rode with The Lone Ranger, flew with Sky King, battled Evil with The Green Hornet and many, many more.

Saturday night was gather around the old radio at Grandpa’s for Grand Old Oprey…………Saturday morning was Buster Brown. Does anyone recall what the cats name was on the Buster Brown show? I do……
Jill Stanford
Golly Charlott — that’s a stumper! The jingle went: "I’m Buster Brown I live in a shoe! Here’s my dog Tag – he lives in here too!"
Will you reveal the cat’s name?
ArthurB
Isn’t his dog "Tie"?
I’ll need to post the picture of Buster Brown and Tie visiting Hood River, at the Paris Fair, circa 1910.

You know Arthur, after saying this out loud several times, I believe you are right! Still waiting on Charlott for the cats name.
charlott
I thought the dogs name was Tyge who lived in there too.
Don’t you remember the long haired black cat named MIDNIGHT????
Which came first…Buster Brown or the Buster Brown Haircut?
Jill Stanford
I Googled Buster Brown, hoping to find out about the hair cut (which I did not find -yet) but I did find this: Buster Brown’s bulldog was named Tige. And I have to admit that I don’t remember a cat at all. I wonder why ? Thanks Charlott for the name.
Arthur
charlott, maybe I shouldn’t ask, but how do you know that the radio cat had long black hair?
charlott
I remember listening to The Buster Brown Show and then when it started on T.V. Midnight the cat was a long black haired cat. Guess I couldn’t have seen Midnight on the radio.
Okay when the Buster Brown Shoe Co. started Buster Keaton was the big movie idol. The man who started the company was named Brown and he must have thought with everyone so interested in Buster Keaton, Buster Brown was the way to go.
