We’ve met Irene Slingerland before in this post, but I had to share this striking portrait. We know she was born in Vermont in 1849, and came to Hood River with W. A. Slingerland about 1883. They were living in this ranch house in 1902 when they sold it to Louis Plog. They remained neighbors of the Plogs, living across the street, and the Slingerland records we have appear to have come through the Plog family.
The Slingerlands were prominent local orchardists. W. A. was one of the organizers of the predecessor to the Apple Growers Association.

After selling their Hood River home, the Slingerlands moved to Portland.
Irene and William Slingerland divorced in 1928.
William’s mother, Elfrida Slingerland Bullard also owned land in the Hood River area.
In 1898, William tore down the old Barrett district school house and hauled the lumber to his place.
