Here are four Alva Day views from March, 1948 labelled “North” “South” “East” and “West”. The east and west views seem to be from the same spot, down by the Mount Hood Railroad tracks, right near where the new Mt. Hood Railroad shop is located. It looks to me like he moved to the other side of the track to capture the north and south views. The construction is captioned “A. Eng’r’s Pump.” Given the amount of concrete they poured, I suspect that whatever it was, it is still there.

Does anyone know the name of that "Distillery and Winery"?? I didn’t know that the Hood River wine roots went so far back.

In the West photograph, is that the Springhouse Cellars building during construction or what’s left of "the ruins"?

"A. Eng’r’s Pump" may refer to Army Corps of Engineers, there’s an extensive system of storm drainage and pumps put in by the Corps sometime after Bonneville to control subsurface water through the photo area, and down on the port area.

My Grandfather, A.W. Peters and friends started the distillery. I don’t know the year but I could look it up in his diaries. I remember seeing it as a small girl on a visit. Looking down the elevator shaft was scary.The war caused the failure of the enterprise — they were WAY ahead of their times, however.

I think springhouse is in the background of the "west" photo.

What happened to the buildings that made them the "ruins". Fire I suspect?
You can see in that photo the building that now houses the kayak shed, and maybe the billboard that used to be beside it. The billboard was just removed about 5 years ago.

In the photo looking east, the house sitting up on the loops was the home of Wallace "Fibber" McGee. He was a postman in town in the 1940’s.

About the mid 1950’s, my Mom met the fellow who bought the distillery with the intention of starting to make vodka there. He invited us to come look at his purchase and he took us through the building. I had never before smelled such a potent odor that one that came from the uncleaned wine spills.
