This great postcard view of the Hood River High School girls’ basketball team is one of several in our collection of Ruth (Hanna) Barnett material donated by her granddaughter. I’m not sure of the exact year, but it would have been shortly after the new four year high school was built on May Street. I believe Ruth Hanna was born in 1892, though some sources say 1895. We’ll have to check the early yearbooks from the 1907-1909 date range to find the year for this image.

I sure hope they didn’t play basketball with those bows in their hair.

Ruthie is the far right. After you posted about her a year or so ago I looked her up and bought the book “The Abortionist, A Woman against the Law”.
There are several old photos in the book- so I could identify her face from that.
She had a very interesting life in Portland, she was very successful and had an excellent reputation for taking the utmost care of her clients.
There is a different photo of the women’s basketball team in the book that says 1910. Also photo of her parents Hood River store, ‘JE Hanna’s cheap cask store’

These ladies had more freedom playing basketball in the early 1900’s than I did in the 1960’s.
For me, there were no girls teams. We only played in P.E. class. We could only dribble the ball three times then we had to pass it.
My mom played competitive basketball in the 1930’s.
