This Weister photo was taken at Horsetail Falls. I like the way a very slight hand tint can bring an image to life.
Here’s another great example of how the forest canopy has changed the view dramatically. I’m not sure if you can even see the “Cathedral Domes” from the highway anymore.

In 1920? you could see who was coming around the corner.
It appears that perhaps the hillside has been deliberately cleared away for scenery.
I wonder if, before the Highway was ever put in, the railroad might have cleared ground to provide scenery for the passengers?

Great to go above Horsetail to upper Horsetail Falls also known as Ponytail. The trail goes behind the falls in a large cavity for novel views of the river.
Longshot
I would suspect the hillside were logged first for timber and then kept bare by being logged repeatedly for steamboat and railroad fuel. Fires started by the sparks and cinders from the engines would likely have done their share of keeping the ground open as well.
