By July 1991 the human-directed engineering of the Hood River waterfront was complete. The Hood River Inn sat upon fill, a new boat basin and Port Marina Park were complete. There is a boat launch into the basin. The basin is full of boats and the marina beach is swarming with windsurfers. Nichols Boatworks has moved to the south end of the 1962 “Hood River Harbor” project, and the old moorage/marina has been relocated to the east.
Since this picture the waterfront was radically changed by two weather events: a 1996 flood moved massive amounts of rock and sediment down the Hood River to form the base of a new Hood River Delta, and the Election Day 2006 flood brought the new delta to the surface as an unmistakable feature of our waterfront. Nichols Basin access was blocked to any craft with a draft greater than 6″, and the Port Marina Beach was reshaped.
