We have an exact date for this aerial view: February 12, 1968. Dredging and fill was rapidly transforming the waterfront. The 1962 Army Corps of Engineers project constructed the Hood River Harbor (Nichols Basin). By 1968 this site for the Eddie Mays Inn and the “Hood River Village” was ready for business. It has been under construction since at least 1964. Another angle captured the same day shows most of the main waterfront area, from the Hook to the Nichols Basin was also complete. Shortly after this the boat basin and marina area to the west of the bridge was constructed. Also note the new toll booth on the Hood River White Salmon Bridge.

Bob Vaughan ran a dredge near the bridge. He died in 1967, so may not have lived to see the finished port area. He was on the Port of Hood River Commission and Hood River assistant fire chief.
