There was an upside to running those stairs. The summer after I graduated I started logging for my dad. The first two mornings I beat those loggers to the top of the mountain to go to work. That night my dad told me that was great, but since I didn’t have a clue what to do when I got there, maybe I should pick out one guy that knew what he was doing and get behind him and maybe I would learn how to stay alive and at least learn how to do the dumbest job on the crew.

I can’t tell you how many times Dick related racing up those stairs. I thought he would divorce me when one time we were downtown and I suggested he run the stairs and I pick him up at the top. If looks could kill I would have died right where I stood…All I wanted to know was how long it would take him…..

Thank you Coach Kindred and Coach Vannett, I now have legs like tree stumps from those stairs, but your efforts to make us athletes were outstanding.
