Historic Hood River
Hood River Library

Notes
This is a good view of our 1913 Carnegie Library as it was originally constructed, before additions in two separate projects to the east and west. You can see the Roe Parker House which was relocated for the later expansion.

I had preschool in the basement when it looked like this in the early 1960’s.

The downstairs or basement also served as the county court room before the present courthouse was constructed. I remember peeking in the windows to see the packed court room during the Imlah murder trial, probably in 1955.

One of our major discoveries with our turntable project at the Oregon Rail Heritage Center in Portland was the Carnegie Homestead plant impressions in the steel of the bridge structure. It was built in 1924, well after Andrew sold the plant so we don’t know if it is old steel or they just kept using the impression after the sale. These impressions were until 2020 hidden under many years of crud build up until the rehab. Interesting how Andrew lives on……….

Couldn’t find the Imlah murder on google.

Donald Dwaine Imlah:
"At 2:20 P.M. on Saturday, December 12, 1953, the judge having completed his charge, the jury retired to deliberate upon their verdict."

In 1947 and for the next 3 years, I started walking by the library every school day on my way to Park Street School. And I always thought it was a very nice building.
In the 1950’s, Hood River Civic Theater often had their play rehearsals there on the stage in the basement.

The basement of the library was a wet mess for years until it was fixed. I thought some of the courthouse was housed in the basement of the US Bank & a "quansit hut" in the parking lot out back.
