Notes
Though this print has been through a lot, it still shows a great view of Hood River at the start of the 20th century. The Fashion Livery is on Oak Street, narrowing the date to 1900-1912. It looks like the Lost Lake Lumber Company is still in operation, which would further limit the date to 1900-1906. I also think I can see the E.W. Gibbs house (which we learned about last week in this image), so I’d put our date at 1905-1906.

It is one of those photos that you can spend hours identifying different areas and buildings.
I did not realize the lumber company was that far east of the HR.
And I am surprised at the number of buildings for 1905.

I wondered if you can see it in today’s photo. Or at least the house.
That is such a barren hill in that photo.

Are those clear cuts in the upper valley to the west or maybe about Odell?

Not the upper valley, as the upper valley is behind that big hill……..probably Middle Mountain. It would be closer to Odell.

I know Arthur. Tags are a real pain. Unless you are the one using them.
I figure if I was looking for a tag, then it might be worth tagging, so that is why I mention them. You are more than welcome to ignore me.
Like you nels, I wondered if those were clear cuts. But I’m not sure they practiced clear cutting per se in 1905. I would think that even in 1905 you would see areas that the Indians burned, but those must have been up higher.

My money is that those indeed were clearcuts on middle mt., possible fire was a player also, but often after cutting.
Clearcuts were absolutely practiced in the early 1900’s.

I got to wondering later about those "clear cuts". Is that hill now planted in orchards? A lot of ground was cleared for orchards.
