Historic Hood River
Miss Grace Howell
12-7-2023
Notes
Meet Miss Grace Howell on her graduation day. Notes say “1890” but I think that is too early. She completed the 8th grade in 1898 so I’m happier with a date of circa 1902.
The Hood River Glacier archives show 43 different issues in which Miss Howell is featured, for everything from performing a recitation to losing a purse with $25 in gold. It appears it was pretty easy to get your name in the newspaper back then, especially if you hung out in certain social circles.
While it’s not completely clear, it appears there was a slightly later Grace Howell in Hood River: Grace Ann Howell, born 1895 and died 1916. She was sister to Arthur Howell, partner to blacksmith Claude Cuddeford. It’s possible some of the later newspaper clippings are talking about Grace Ann Howell. Can anyone clarify the genealogy, and tell us what become of this Miss Howell?

Jeffrey Bryant
The 1900 census shows her living in Wasco County, born May 1880 in Oregon, with parents Newbern or Newberry and Ida, and brother Walter L., who was born April 1887 in Washington. There was an older child not listed.

I do not find the parents in the 1905 city directory, so I suspect they moved soon after 1902.

FYI – The Hood River Community Tree in FamilySearch was updated yesterday.

Jeffrey did this FAG, so I assume it is fairly accurate for Grace Ann Howell Koontz.
