It looks like these folks are taking the easy route up Mt. Hood. I don’t see any skis or much snow, so I’m guessing this is summertime at Timberline and the lift is providing easy access to the higher elevations. Or is the Meadows? Joe Kollas photo.

Studying this photo, I was thinking what an ingenious invention and wondered if the first ones were built in Europe. But, wikipedia says the first ones were built in Sun Valley, Idaho in 1936-37.

This is not Meadows. Meadows is east of White River Canyon which is quite a ways from this photo. Meadows has also only recently been granted access to operate during the summer months from the Forest Service (I think it 2014 when they were granted the right to run the Stadium Chairlift in the summer.) This photo is at Timberline.

Yes, Union Pacific Railroad engineers designed the first for their Sun Valley resort…..go figure….a RR connection to chair lifts,….

That is the old original Magic Mile that ran from a door in Timberline Lodge, up over the White River canyon head, and into a doorway in the Silcox Hut. I rode almost 60 years ago.

During a recent visit to Timberline Lodge I noted the chairlift is illustrated on the rear of the " Pee Chee Notebook " "¦. Complete with a rider and a faint Mtn view.
