Check out that logo for the Hood River Height baseball team. Maybe I should adopt it for “Historic Hood River”?
The players are Ray (or Roy) Kuntz, “Shorty” Bucklin, ? Dunn, and Carl Kent. They’re playing at the field at 12th and Belmont.
“Shorty” Bucklin? That’s a cheap shot.

Town baseball teams were a big part of my life in grade school. All little towns had a team on the coast and on Sundays the whole town turned out for the games. And traveling to away games was normal. During the week the team let us practice with them and learning to catch a ball when they "burned" it into us was part of life. I was a disappointed lad when we moved to Hood River and learned the high school didn’t have a team. "Shorty" Bucklin maybe played shortstop and was the fastest and best athlete on the team.

My dad said he would rush home from school, do his chores, and then hop on his bicycle and ride several miles to play or watch a baseball game.
He was a fan of baseball, because he said, "it was a game the little guy could play". Which I guess means a short guy could play it.
He also said, you could often times get a pretty good job with a business in town if you were a good baseball player.

Baseball has always been a big part of my life here going back to the early 80’s. This town has put up some pretty great teams, including the last three years at the High School. Thank’s for putting this one up Arthur.

I am wondering if that might be Percy Bucklin as a very young man. I didn’t know him until he was elderly, so really wouldn’t know what he looked like in his youth. As I recall he was not a tall man.

The players in this picture are Ray Kuntz – Shorty Bucklin ( played shortstop ) – Bill Dun ( Bill was the manager but must have played also ) Carl Kent.
Don’t know what year this team played.
