“Hercules” is a pretty good name for an engine. It must have been easier to come up with names before all the good ones were taken.
The Palmer and Rey Foundry in Portland advertised their gas and gasoline engine in The Hood River Glacier in 1894. They mention marine and mining applications. This is the era when internal combustion engines were making inroads into all the industrial uses previously dominated by steam engines.

If you are interested in these old engines, WAAAM has a nice collection located in Building 1 north, north east corner. Also included are several two cycle, Maytag washing machine motors.

To see more old engines of all types they are numerous at Antique Powerland Museum Association (APMA) at Brooks. There are now over twelve different museums on the grounds, steam, gas, cars, trolleys trucks, motorcycles etc. This is one of Arlen’s many involvements, he is a great source of information.

The gas may refer to LP gas. Don’t know if it was available at that time.

Many locales would have had piped natural gas at that point in time.
