Notes

I found second print of this view of the Henry Coe “Mansion” on what us now Sherman Street near 9th. I’ve cropped it tight so you can see a more intimate view of the porch, with a woman I’m guessing is Mrs. Coe enjoying the view. We previously identified two bicycles on the porch. I think there might be a third one on the wraparound section to the left.

We’ve seen this house before here and here.

The link below is the elder Coe home which gives you an idea of the view both homes had.

Can you tell if those are boards or logs on the first floor? They almost look like logs.
I wish Henry had left us a diary. As a riverboat captain on the Columbia, a rancher in the Yakima Valley and a business man in Portland and California, his knowledge of the area would have been extensive.

The Nathaniel Coe family papers are available for research at the Oregon Historical Society Museum.

Knowing there was at least one Coe diary at the Oregon Historical Society I had searched a bit and found a good listing of their archives at this site, https://archiveswest.orbiscascade.org/ark:/80444/xv00355

Thanks for the reference. Looks like a fascinating collection of first hand experiences.
