Historic Hood River
Heirloom Apples

Notes
This W. F. Laraway view of the inside of the tent at the fair is sharp enough that I can read many of the tags on the boxes. The boxes we’re seeing are mostly from F. Chandler, which I believe is Frank Chandler. He had a fruit orchard in the Hood River Valley as early as 1904. Some of the boxes on the right are from H. O. Sieverkropp. From left to right, we’re looking at (rear): Northern Spy, Hydes King, Yellow Newton, Baldwin, Yellow Newton, Baldwin, Ortley, ?, (front): ?, Spitzenberg, Hydes King, Spitzenberg, Blue Pearmain, ?.
I know you can still sample many of these apples at Kiyakowa Orchards every fall. I don’t think I have ever tasted Baldwin, Hydes King or Blue Permain. Have you?
