Historic Hood River
Heights Food Store
6-20-2017

Notes
This structure is long gone, but we’ve seen it when it was Van Riper Electric. It’s 1414 12th Street, now home to True Gorge Stoves and Spa
This was also the location of Hubbard Taylor’s Handy Corner

A bit off subject, but think all should know the freedom train engine will be going up the WA shore on the way to Bend on Sat June 24. Best views are from the OR side as the WA highway will be a nightmare of people following the train.

Thanks Ken. My mother in law lived close to the tracks in Camas, WA. She was 90 years old when the train made, I think, its first trip east. She was standing at her sink washing dishes when she heard the train coming, picked up her head and said, "that’s a steam engine!"
Amazing the things stored in ones head.
As for the Heights, that area has always seemed older to me than downtown.

When I lived in Aurora ( 3 miles from Canby ) I could hear the Freedom train whistle when it was going through Canby. I could rush out onto the porch and enjoy it steaming and whistling through Aurora from my front porch vantage. Once, I followed (raced) it to Woodburn just to see it again.

reminds me of Hickeys, I think that was the name, grocery store where my grandparents, John H. and Ella Sheldrake got all their grocerys as neither drove an automobile and they delivered on credit….it was also on the Heights.
Jill, yes the steam whistle is certainly distinctive……the 4449 will be busting up the Gorge this weekend, Saturday to bend, sunday back to Portland. I will wave as we pass HR.
Patti
You are correct Arlen… that was "Hickey’s" food Store… brings back ‘fond’ memories about all of the stores on the "heights"… as well as downtown 😇
Sylvia I. Smith
Is this one of the stores that A.C. Staten had his grocery business in?
ArthurB
Sylvia, I can’t find anything in our records o answer your question. I took a quick look at the newspaper archives ad discovered he killed a 17 lb. goose in 1903, but didn’t find the location of his business.
