Notes
The baseball diamond at 12th and Belmont got lots of use in the 1910’s, at least according to the images in Arline Moore’s album. Here we see Merle Gessling at bat.
Records indicate there was a Heights team as well as a downtown team, and they occasionally played teams from the Dalles. This match took place in 1912.

It’d be interesting to find out if this field sat where the current little league fields are today. gotta be pretty close.

RHD, the 1916 Sanborn map shows the ball field at the SW corner of 12th and Union (Belmont). You can see the fence in the link below. I think it’s basically where the armory is today.

James Gessling
That’s my grandpa! He used to tell us about being the first one in town who knew how to drive a car. But for going out courting he much preferred a horse and buggy. On the way home he could curl up on the seat and sleep. The horse knew where to go and then would rattle the reins when they got home to wake the driver so he could get unhitched and fed.

James, if your grandfather wasn’t the first to drive in Hood River he was one of the first. His exploits with his automobile were reported in the Hood River Glacier in 1907.
