This view of a yard full of locomotives was a bit dark so I didn’t notice the smiley face right away. This presents a dilemma. The image caption says “Oregon Lumber Company Trains used to haul logs”, The “smiley face” is having its 50th anniversary, according to this article. According to Wikipedia the Oregon Lumber Company dissolved in 1957, 6 years too early to sport a smiley face on one of their locomotives. So what’s the truth about this image? I suspect Arlen and his railroad crew will have this sorted out quickly.

You’re experiencing paredolia, the tendency to see faces where they don’t exist. The “smile” is the shadow of the boiler door. The dark splotches are the door’s hinges and latches. Cool picture!

Either way you can see the face, I saw it instantly. Easily a myth.

A quick site status: Things are mostly working, including internal links (links within posts to posts on the old site are getting forwarded to the new site). The only thing I know isn’t working now is links on external sites: if you have a personal site which includes a URL pointing to the old site, it won’t work right now. This should be fixed by next week, so don’t bother changing your links. Old HHR links will automatically translate to new HHR links very soon.

@jnails, also, you should see the names of the next and previous posts just above the image in the current post. Also, see where it says “Home > Historic Hood River >“? If you click on Historic Hood River you’ll enter a browser view which lets you see all the posts as thumbnail. We’ll be adding a more obvious way to do that next time we update the site– like maybe a “Browse” button.
