Notes
What an unusual portrait. I’m not sure what occasioned this group of unrelated people to pose, but we have a period annotation of all the subjects. We also have a date of 1890 which was added by someone later. I think 1890 is a good guess, as Julia Barrett (upper left) died in 1893. We heard her tragic story in this posting.
The photo includes Julia Barrett, Grace Clark, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Howe, Ellie McKay, Nettie Clark, Nancy Belieu, Gertrude Ingalls, Mrs. G.H. Middleton, and Mrs. Kline.

These photographs took a long time to expose, so they had to hold those poses for 30+ seconds. Thus, everyone tends to look dead and frozen, and no one is looking at the same thing.

I believe she is holding a cane of some sort.

This photo must date after July 24, 1889 because that is the date that Miss Gertrude Balch married James Weston Ingalls at the Congregational Church in Hood River. This according to the Hood River Glacier dated July 27, 1889. Miss Julia Barrett played a wedding march and Miss Grace Clark attended the bride. Mr. Lewis Clark was best man.
Fred aka Frederick Howe married Gertrude Ingalls the sister to James Weston Howe mentioned above, which as relatives explains their presence in the photo. The Howe’s came to Hood River in 1875 with their parents Alfred A. Ingalls and wife, Emma Josephine Ingalls, from Tioga Co., Penn., as part of the Parkhurst Colony. They were also members of the Congregational Church in Hood River.
