Historic Hood River
Gorgemobile Contest Revisited

Notes
Someone asked me for a “pre-fountain” view of the Second Street Stairs, and here it is. Over the July 4th weekend in 1995 there was a “Gorgemobile Contest” on 2nd Street, as you can see by the arrival of a new entrant. I believe it was run by the Columbia Gorge Windsurfing Association. We saw a couple of nice views of the Gorgemobile Contest here and here.
I believe the fountain was constructed along with the 1998 urban renewal project (or immediately after). I recall former mayor Chuck Beardsley was instrumental in the fountain project, but please share any details you can recall. There was all sorts of activity in this corridor in those years, with not only the urban renewal and fountain construction but the construction of a new overpass on Second Street over the railroad and freeway.
Pink was a very popular color that year.

Miss those days when the young surfers had their humorous ‘surfmobiles’. Seems like most of the surfers are now a little older and mellowed.
