Historic Hood River
Glaciers in the Glacier
This image apparently ran in The Hood River Glacier in the 1920s with the caption, “Mount Hood glaciers will be made accessible by the new Loop road.”
The Mount Hood Loop Highway doesn’t get as much attention as the Columbia River Highway, but it was an impressive and important piece of engineering which did, as the Glacier promised, make the mountain far more accessible. While most of it has been built and rebuilt many times since the 1920s, much of the road follows the basic lines engineered one hundred years ago. There are a few pieces of the original highway hidden in the woods, like the section with Sahale Falls near Mt. Hood Meadows.
