Gerdes Home and Bone Livery

This one is a little hard to picture because nothing you see remains. We’re on Cascade Avenue just west of Second Street. That’s Charley Bone’s Livery to the left, and the Gerdes home just beyond. You can make out just a little bit of the roof line of the old OR&N Company rail depot behind the Gerdes home. The Gerdes Hotel/ Rooming House was eventually built on the same site as the home, which is now the site of the Eyeglass Store.
Here is another view of the same livery building. The windows are somewhat different but the siding and stoop are the same. I’m not sure which view is older. In this view the Gerdes home seems to match the 1893 Sanborn better than the 1902 Sanborn.
There is an interesting apparatus extending above the roof of the building across Cascade from the livery. There was a two story building at that site in 1893 which was gone by 1902, again suggesting a pre-1902 date. By 1904 the brick Waucoma Hotel (later Hotel Oregon) was being constructed on that corner, so we’re certainly pre-1904.

I think photo number 238 is another view, even though you were unsure at the time you posted it. I had to browse around to find it, but the Real Estate sign reminded me of this wagon load of guys going out to look at land.
