Perhaps these men are testing a new rope tow. More likely they are enjoying a tug-of-war on skis. The size of this crowd makes me think skiing was enjoying a surge in popularity in the 1920s.

I can’t really tell, but at least some of these people look quite youthful to me. Could be some sort of cross country event in the works. I noticed in the back those people seem to be spectators due to their attire. I not that a woman in a dress?
Also notice the tips of those old skis on the left hand side of the picture.

Perhaps a school outing with many of the participants from Portland?
What is that on the ground in the bottom left hand corner. Looks like warped skis.

Too bad the photographer did not take a picture of what was at the other end of the rope they seem to be pulling.

Maybe it is a Yeti.

Look close. What we thought was ski aren’t. They look like some sort of metal runners with holes bored in the tips, plus the fact that they are somewhat I guess what I might call inter-twined, as skis wouldn’t be globbed up like that.
I imagine at the other end of the rope is another group of people.
